"The Church is currently lobbying authorities to be allowed to develop Vouliagmeni which is zoned as protected forest."
I happen to live near Vouliagmeni, and oddly enough there was a forest fire there last year burning off most of the forest. With the Greek penchant of liking to build high up the hills and mountain to get that million euro seaview, the fire didn't really surprise me. Once the forest is gone, after all, there's no reason not to build there.
The church also owns some of the most popular beaches and beach clubs near here, where you have to pay up to 25 euros for the weekend to enter the beach. Strange, considering that officially ALL of Greece's beaches are considered public and everyone has the right to enjoy them free of charge. You can't. The "free beach" part is usually some rocky area to the side, a few meters wide, while the main part is thoroughly fenced off and admission fee entry only...
And let's not forget all the land scandals the church was directly involved in over the past years, totalling hundreds of millions of euros. For men of god supposedly, they show remarkable greed for material gains.
