AVALON, Pa. -- Police said they were able to make a quick arrest in an attempted convenience store robbery in Avalon thanks to the color of the suspect's eyes.
Conor McClelland, 19, is accused of walking into a Marathon Quik Serve gas station and demanding the attendant to give him the cash drawer.
The clerk said she told him that police were on the way and he ran away from the store empty-handed. Even though police said McClelland was wearing a hooded black sweatshirt and a blue bandanna over his face, the clerk still recognized the man as a repeat customer.
"The clerk actually knew the person that came in there and did the robbery, stated that she has seen him several times and he comes in several times in the morning," said Avalon Borough Police Chief Thomas Kokoski. The clerk said McClelland has distinct blue eyes, which helped her identify him. Investigators said McClelland ran across the street to where he was staying after attempting to rob the business.
"Our officers immediately went up to the area and the suspect was apparently peeking around the house, which led to a small foot chase, and the suspect ran into his own house," said Kokoski. Police said McClelland was found in the basement of the home and arrested. Investigators said they also found drug paraphernalia on him. "He wasn't the smartest of criminals. It's pretty easy to say that," Kokoski said.
McClelland was arraigned and is being held in the Allegheny County Jail on $20,000 bond. He is expected to appear in court on Thursday.
