ATHENS - The tragic events of the past days in the centre of Athens - the murder of a man in a robbery by three illegal immigrants, and the killing of a citizen from Bangladesh, both in Patissia, the heart of the capital.
The hunt on immigrants by members of far-right groups; the attack carried out by hooded people throwing Molotov cocktails at a police station in Exarchia, and the injuring of three people - have infuriated people in Athens and have faced the government with its responsibilities.
This is reported today by the newspapers which announce that Prime Minister Giorgio Papandreou, after this afternoon's cabinet meeting, will do what everybody has been waiting for since March and has been postponed various times: he will announce the measures decided by the government to try and restore public order.
Most people living in Athens think that the current situation is unbearable. A poll carried out by Kapa Research for the weekly To Vima tis Kiriakis shows that 85.5% of people who were interviewed think that quality of life in the centre of Athens has worsened substantially due to crime and the presence of illegal immigrants. They ask the State, municipality and police to accept their responsibilities. Moreover, 77% of those interviewed believe that the immigration problem should be taken care of ''with absolute priority'', while 59.6% ask for more police in the historic centre.
