Over the past couple of years 5.440 people have become Belgian citizens without ever having set foot in Belgium, says Theo Franken, MP for Flanders, when he requested information from the Foreign Minister.
"This is a travesty of the 'snel-Belgwet' (a fast-track law that allows someone to become a Belgian citizen)," says Francken. "In Germany or France it would be impossible to become a citizen without ever having lived in the country. Only in Belgium is this possible because of this law."
Soon, another attempt will be made to revise this law in Parliament. If this attempt also fails then the paperwork will end up on the desk of Elio Di Rupo, who is currently assigned to form a new government.
